oida student Meghna Srivastava got 499 out of 500 marks in CBSE’s Class 12 board exams to top one of India’s most watched academic tests, results announced on Saturday showed.
Srivastava, a student of Step by Step School, lost out on one point in her English paper. Anoushka Chandra, who studies in Ghaziabad’s SAJ School, scored 498 marks to come second. Seven students shared the third spot, scoring 497 marks.
The overall pass percentage this year is 83.01, up one percentage point since last year. Officials said 12,737 candidates scored 95% or above and 72,599 candidates scored 90% and above in the exam.
The top three regions are Trivandrum with 97.32%, Chennai with 93.87% and Delhi with 89%. The pass percentage of candidates in foreign schools this year stood at 94.94 against last year’s 92.02.
Girls outperformed boys with an overall passing percentage of 88.31 compared to 78.09 for boys, repeating a pattern seen for the last few years.
The topper among disabled students was Vijay Ganesh from Palakkad in Kerala, who secured 98.4%. Pooja Kumari from Uttarakhand’s Dehradun stood second with 97.8% and Lavanya Jha of DPS RK Puram in Delhi came third with 97.4%.
According to officials, 141 candidates scored 90% and above marks among disabled students and 25 got 95% and above.
They said 91,818 students failed in one of the five subjects. A candidate failing in one of the five subjects of external examination shall be placed in compartment in that subject provided he or she qualifies in all the subjects of internal assessment. They will have to appear in the compartmental exam later.
For Class 12, 11,86,306 candidates were registered, and the exams were held at 4,138 centres in India and 71 centres outside the country.
The CBSE exams this year were mired in controversy after the Class 12 economics and Class 10 mathematics papers were allegedly leaked, triggering criticism against the board over the way the exams were conducted. A re-test was held for Class 12 economics students but the board decided against one for Class 10 mathematics paper.

This year, students will also be able to check their results on Google.
